The people of the world have reached another important milestone. The Great Blue Marble currently has about 8 billion people, and it is growing at the slowest rate since 1950 with our global population. The majority of the world’s population – 56.2 percent – lives in urban areas, and by 2030 this number is expected to increase to 70 percent of the world’s population.

Amid this increasingly dense urban environment are the world’s most populous urban “megacities.” According to the United Nations, megacities number 10 million or more. There are currently less than 37 megacities in the world, and their number is expected to rise to 41 by 2030.

According to WorldAtlas, the largest cities in the world, the largest after Tokyo, another Japanese city – Osaka, in 10th place:
Tokyo is the most populous city in the world. With 37,274,000 people, it is the most populous city in the world. Despite its large population, Tokyo’s population growth has slowed in recent years, falling from 0.09 percent from 2018 to 2019 to 0.18 percent from 2021 to 2022. Shanghai, China has a population of 28,516,904 and is expected to enter a period of population growth in the coming years. Since 2018, Shanghai’s population has increased from 2.59 percent to 2.87 percent. This means that Shanghai will not only secure its future ranking among the world’s three most populous cities, but will eventually fight for one of the top two spots. Located in east-central China, Shanghai is a commercial powerhouse and one of the largest ports in the world.

With 22,478,116 people living in Dhaka, Bangladesh, it rises through the world’s most populous city rankings. It is also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. As recently as 2018, Dhaka was ranked 7th, but after several years of rapid growth (over 3 percent), Dhaka has moved up to 4th place in this list. Dhaka is in central Bangladesh, bordering the Bay of Bengal on the Indian Ocean. The city serves as the administrative and economic powerhouse of the country. Since becoming an independent country in 1971, Bangladesh has been an area of strong growth, and the population is expected to continue to grow.
São Paulo, Brazil has a population of 22,429,800. São Paulo ranks 5th in the list of the most populous cities in the world, and ranks first among 110 cities in Brazil. The city is located in the southeast of Brazil, where it is surrounded by valleys and foothills. It is known as the largest city in the southern hemisphere and has gained a worldwide reputation as a commercial and industrial center. In 2007, São Paulo officials banned outdoor billboards and banners in an effort to preserve the city’s visual appeal. Although initially met with resistance, a few years later the ban was praised for its effects – primarily the illumination of neglected architecture, buildings such as São Paulo’s Municipal Theater.
Mexico City’s population has grown 540 percent since 1950, and is now 22,085,140. Mexico City may be the sixth most populous city in the world, but it has another claim to fame that’s less accepted: Mexico City is sinking. In the 20th century, the capital sank about 29 to 36 feet (9 to 11 meters) because it sits on top of ever-depleting groundwater. Even after new well drilling in the aquifer was banned in 1958, the clay soil beneath Mexico City has been compacting at a steady rate. Today, parts of the city are sinking 19 inches (50 centimeters) a year.

Cairo, Egypt has a new population of 21,750,020. Although Cairo is the seventh most populous city in the world, the city and all of Egypt are expected to experience rapid economic growth by 2030, according to Harvard University researchers. Home to the Pyramids of Giza, Cairo is part of a region full of historic archaeological finds, including the recent discovery of mummies with gold-plated tongues. Mummies with golden tongues b. E. K. Before 640 BC. and was found at the Kuweisna necropolis in the Nile Delta, about 40 kilometers north of Cairo.
The population of Beijing, China has been increasing since 1975, and is expected to continue until at least 2035, according to a United Nations report. Beijing now has a population of 21,333,332 and is home to one of the largest and best-preserved ancient architectural complexes known as the Forbidden City. The former imperial palace was occupied in 1420 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Forbidden City is a 178-acre (72 ha) complex that exhibits the traditional Chinese practice of feng shui, among other important features.

Finally, Mumbai, India has a population of 20,961,472 – a number that is expected to grow well into the future. Mumbai is sometimes known by its old name, Bombay, or by its relatively new nickname, City of Dreams. Mumbai is known as the City of Dreams for being the center of Bollywood, the name of the Indian film industry. Bollywood produces more than 1000 films a year. Mumbai is also the financial center of India’s jewelery industry.

With a population of 19,059,856, Osaka, Japan ranks 10th on our list of the most populous cities in the world. However, Osaka’s population is expected to decline by 2035. This decline is largely due to migration from the city to the suburbs. Osaka is known as a foodie paradise, largely due to its concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants. Osaka is also home to Osaka Castle, an important center of Japanese culture and one of the country’s oldest landmarks.
