To better understand the most popular engagement ring styles, we surveyed more than 5,000 respondents who got engaged between January and November 2021—and the results speak for themselves. So, are you interested in knowing the most popular engagement ring styles right now, based on real data? Read on to find out and see how your sparkler matches up.

In recent years, we’ve seen couples opt for beautifully cut diamond center stones, sparkling bands, and intricate hardware. But with all creative engagement ring designs, some things never change, such as the most popular shape.

According to The Note 2021 Jewelry & Engagement Study, the most popular engagement ring shape is the round center stone. We found that 41% of those surveyed owned this style, and it’s not a new trend—round has been the most popular engagement ring shape for some time. This claim is not only data-driven but also backed by industry experts. “Round-cut diamonds are consistently the most popular engagement ring shape,” says Shannon Delaney-Roney, director of online ring retailer James Allen, whose look is timeless, versatile and offers plenty of sparkle. “A cone-shaped round cut on a diamond to enhance the sparkle looks extraordinary in all kinds of settings. You can’t beat a classic.”

But while round engagement rings are often a favorite, a new cut is quickly joining the ranks as one of the most popular shapes.

If you think you’re seeing oval-cut engagement rings in your Instagram feed every time you open the app, you’re not alone. This form of engagement ring has become increasingly popular in recent years. Our research found that 19% of respondents received an engagement ring with an oval cut, rising to 15% in 2020. For context, this number was 2% in 2015, which shows that this elongated shape is steadily increasing.

So why are you asking for eggs? Celebrity owners can be influential. Blake Lively was one of the first A-listers to wear an oval engagement ring in 2012, and other stars like Hailey Bieber, Ariana Grande and Kourtney Kardashian have bucked the trend. “It certainly doesn’t hurt the popularity of the oval-shaped gemstone, and many celebrities rock the cut,” says Jillian Sassoon, founder of fine jewelry brand Maro Fine.

Celebrity status aside, ovals make great engagement ring shapes because they elongate the finger, blend well with complementary bands, and are larger than their carat. “The oval shape is timeless and the curves allow for endless stacking options,” Sasson adds. “They actually weigh more than they look.”

Although the round has long been a favorite wedding ring shape, data suggests it is facing a decline. 41% of respondents said they had a round engagement ring, down from 43% in 2020. Our data found that after ovals, princess (or square cut) diamonds are the third most popular style, coming in at 11. % This shape is followed by cushions and pears (or teardrops), both of which account for 7% of wedding ring styles. The most popular wedding ring shapes are 5% emerald and 2% marquise.

The Best Engagement Rings To Give In 2022

According to professionals, beautifully cut diamonds (such as oval, emerald, pear and marquise stones) are slowly but surely gaining traction. “We are excited to see more and more emerald and cushion cut engagement rings among our customers,” adds Sasson. “Awnings are equally exciting because they have a vintage feel and, like ovals, they look bigger than they really are.

Delaney-Ron echoes that prediction. “What we’re most excited about are emeralds and pear-shaped diamonds, two that are gaining popularity thanks to some celebrities,” he explains. “Both are unique and beautiful in their own way.”

When looking at an engagement ring, the first thing you notice is the shape of the center stone. As one of its most defining characteristics, it’s no surprise that it often takes center stage. But believe it or not, the metal dramatically affects the visual appearance of an engagement ring. For example, a rose gold band can add a warmer glow to a center stone than a platinum band. But according to our research, one metal reigns supreme: white gold. 45% of respondents said they own a white gold band, the most popular engagement ring metal. But although this style is at the top, it is steadily declining. In 2017, 61% of rings were white gold, which will drop to less than half in 2021.

While white gold rings are on the decline, yellow gold options are still on the rise. Our research shows that 20% of wedding rings have a yellow gold band, an increase of 11% since 2017. Platinum is the third most popular wedding ring metal at 14%, followed by rose gold at 11%. Sterling silver rounded out the top five and gained 10%.

As for additional options, the most common is a simple design. We found that 35% of engagement rings have prong settings, and 19% have halos or shared prongs. Bands with pavé settings (or additional diamonds) were the third most popular style at 16%.

When it comes to real stones, diamonds are a perennial favorite. After all, there’s a reason why De Beers’ slogan “Diamonds are forever” is still often used today. Our data found that 85% of engagement rings have clear diamonds. Of these, 54% of respondents said their ring had a clear diamond center stone with side stones and/or accents, and 28% said they had a clear diamond solitaire.

However, diamonds are not the only gemstone to choose from. Ten percent said their engagement ring had a gemstone other than a diamond. 28% of them said their ring had a moissanite gemstone, up 9% from 2019. This may indicate that consumers are now interested in finding alternatives to budget diamonds with ethical and sustainable benefits.

Among those without a moissanite ring, sapphire is the second most popular choice, accounting for 17% of gemstone wedding rings. Morganite and opal make up 6% of center stones, while emerald rounds out the top five with 5%.

Reasons To Choose An Oval Diamond Engagement Ring In 2022

Ultimately, there is no shortage of engagement ring design inspiration. While round diamonds are consistently the most popular, more couples are experimenting with their own unique style. “Many of our customers want to express more of their personality in their engagement ring,” reflects Delaney-Rohn. “People are less concerned about fitting into a ‘shape’ and more focused on a unique piece that speaks to them and their love.
