Which Cell Phone Service Is The Best

When it comes to the best prepaid phone plans, Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T aren’t the only names in town.

While most Americans order service directly from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon, several smaller carriers can offer you solid service at a lower price. While the major operators are now mainly focused on unlimited plans, these smaller operators still offer a variety of plans with fixed amounts of high-speed data or even better prices for unlimited data. One of them might be the best prepaid phone plan for you.

There are many carriers, but for this story I’ll focus on just a few: Boost Mobile, Cricket, Mint, Google Fi, Tracfone, Metro by T-Mobile, Total by Verizon, Verizon Prepaid, and AT&T Prepaid. Since these carriers also have so many different plan options, I’ll also focus on the best options for under 5GB data, under 10GB data and unlimited plans.

There are two main types of payment methods for phone service: postpaid, where you pay at the end of the month, and prepaid, where you buy the service before you use the phone. The ads you see for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are almost always for postpaid plans, while the plans and carriers we’re talking about here are all prepaid plans.

You buy data and access before you use it. Prepaid plan providers let you buy in different increments – 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, six months or even a whole year – with prices often changing depending on how long you’re willing to commit.

As I mentioned in the coverage of the best unlimited plans, you need to make sure you have the coverage you need to get the most out of your deal. This makes it difficult to give a solid recommendation for one carrier: T-Mobile’s service in New York might be great, but if you’re in, say, rural Iowa, Verizon is more reliable.

Prepaid service providers almost always use someone else’s service. You should check what the main network is before signing up for it. Each offers some version of 5G and I’ve covered them all here, but in summary:

If you have friends or family in your area who already use a prepaid provider, ask about their experiences. You can also go to a major carrier store and see if they offer free options to try service before switching, such as T-Mobile’s Network Pass.

As with the major carriers, there are periods when prepaid players offer deals. Boost Mobile ran a promotion for new customers that allows you to get three lines with unlimited talk, text and data for $90 per month ($30 per line) after the first $100 payment. It has since added a new unlimited plan that is $25 a month for new users, though each line must be separate and cannot be grouped into a family plan.

Some prepaid providers even offer discounts when you buy a new device, although unlike the major carriers, they don’t expect the same big deals that offer the new iPhone 14 or Galaxy S22 for free. These deals often come with 24 or 36-month payment plans that aren’t actually offered in advance by nature.

Boost Mobile has added an unlimited plan for new users that offers unlimited talk, text and data for $25 per month, including taxes and fees. Unlike Mint Mobile’s 12-month plan, our previous pick in this slot, Boost’s plan isn’t tied to 12-month installments. However, you must be a new Boost customer to receive the offer.

The plan includes access to 5G and 30GB of high-speed data per month (if you go over, your data will be throttled until the start of the next billing month). A hotspot is also included which pulls this data from your high speed distribution. One thing to note: To get the $25 monthly rate, you need to set up automatic payments.

Ryan Reynolds’ phone company made a name for itself with its quirky advertising, but it also has one of the best unlimited data deals we’ve seen. Get unlimited calls, texts and data for $30 per line per month for 12 months. You’ll get 35GB of high-speed 5G and 4G LTE data per month on T-Mobile’s networks, though if you run out of the 30-day period before the reset, your speeds will be adjusted to 3G speeds.

As with all plans, the value will vary depending on your specific needs and whether that particular network works well in your area. Google has updated the unlimited plans for its Fi cell phone service, which not only lowers the monthly price, but also adds useful features. While $50 for one line is much higher than Mint, you can save a bit with three or more lines.

A plan called Simply Unlimited runs $25 per line per month with three lines and drops to $20 per month if you have four lines or more. It now includes 35GB of high-speed data, plus talk, text and data in Canada and Mexico. The plan also now offers 5GB of hotspot data, although this is a “hard” cap where the hotspot feature stops after 5GB of usage rather than a data cap.

Other options: Metro and Cricket offer similar options that are $30 per line if you have three lines, but if you have four or five lines, the line price drops to $25 per month ($100 per month, $125 for four lines). for five lines). Both are still more expensive than Fi’s updated offering and don’t offer cellular data with these plans.

Cricket says it “may temporarily slow down data speeds when the network is busy”, while Google says it will cap data if you exceed 35GB per month. Metro speeds similarly slow down if you use more than 35GB per month, and T-Mobile prioritizes its users over those on Metro plans.

Tracfone does not offer a traditional unlimited data plan. Prepaid options from Verizon and AT&T start at $50 per month with automatic payments ($65 off).

Cricket and Metro also offer benefits with their top-tier unlimited plans – with Cricket, you get an HBO Max subscription with ads, while Metro offers an Amazon Prime subscription, one year of ViX Plus and 100GB of Google One storage. But these prices are higher per line if you’re only looking for one, two, or three lines.

If you’re looking for four or more lines, you should consider the best unlimited subway plan. The deal is priced at $30 per month per line, so if that’s on your budget, you might want to check this deal out, as you get perks like Amazon Prime and Google One alongside the service for the same line price.

Verizon’s new Total by Verizon service includes Disney Plus with its top plan, but at $60 a month for one line and $165 a month for four lines, it’s probably not worth it.

If price is the most important factor for you, check out the Google Fi Simply Unlimited plan we mentioned above.

But anything less than four lines and the subway is much more expensive than Menta. This premium unlimited plan costs $60 per month for one phone line, $90 per month for two lines, and $120 for three lines.

It’s worth mentioning that Metro — like AT&T, Verizon, and Boost — works with the government’s Affordable Connectivity Program. If you qualify for this plan, you can get Metro’s $40/month unlimited plan for $10/month (and the plan with benefits can be $30/month instead of the usual $60/month).

When it comes to data under 10GB, Mint is again the best value if T-Mobile’s network is solid in your area. While Metro and Cricket charge $40 per month for a single line, and Boost has $35 for 10GB of data, Mint beats them all on price.

Getting 10GB of 4G LTE/5G monthly data costs $20 per month on Mint when purchased in 12-month increments for new users. After that, you can purchase three additional months for $35 per month ($105 total), six months for $25 per month ($150 total), or an additional year for $20 per month ($240 total).

More options: Google Fi has an “Account Protection” feature designed to reimburse you for unused data, but with a maximum monthly fee
